Teacher by day; graduate student by night. (Blogger sometime in between). I’m a fourth year teacher in a low-income public charter school in Philadelphia, and I’m hungry for a special kind of student achievement. I “teach” 8th grade writing, but my students learn way more than that. Grammar, vocabulary, independent reading, structured writing, and other Common-Core aligned standards (as mandated by my school and state) can be found in each day’s lesson, but by the time class has ended, social justice, cooperative learning, and a myriad of other approaches have enlivened my lesson and students. I do not just teach to educate. I teach to excite my students about their lives and future once they realize the power and pleasure of learning. I teach to impassion.
